Kannur: The Kerala Police have revealed that it was an anonymous note sent to the State Bank of Travencore - where Bitti Mohanty was working under a alias - that helped them nab the rape convict. Reports say that the note might have been sent by a jilted girlfriend and bank colleague.
The police are trying to find out how Bitti Mohanty managed to evade the police for six years and hide in plain sight. Police from four states - Kerala, Rajasthan, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are trying to piece together the mystery.
Bitti, who jumped parole in 2006, had been living and working in Kerala as Raghav Rajan. Bitti has been sent to 10-days police custody. He was taken to Jaipur on Tuesday, where his identity will be verified through a DNA test.
A Kerala Police team on Tuesday visited Puttaparthi as part of their efforts to gather details about. The team approached local revenue department officials to get details about Mohanty, who is said to have stayed in Puttaparthi in Anantapur district for about three years after jumping parole, sources said.
According to sources, Mohanty was suspected to have forged several documents in Andhra Pradesh to conceal his real identity during his stay in the State. When contacted, Puttaparthi Deputy Superintendent of Police Venkataiah said, "Kerala Police have not approached us till now for any help".
Bitti jumped parole in 2006 while serving a seven-year sentence for rape in Alwar in Rajasthan and had gone underground. Bitti was living in Kerala as 'Raghav Rajan' and had secured a job at a public sector bank.
Bitti, who is the son of former Odisha DGP BB Mohanty, has also been charged with cheating, forgery and impersonation.
