In 2015, after Baahubali: The Beginning was released and became a blockbuster, there was just one question taking the nation by storm: Why did Katappa kill Baahubali? The film ended on a cliffhanger, with the audience shocked as the final scene showed Baahubali’s trusted right-hand man, Katappa stabbing him. The question lingered for two years until Baahubali: The Conclusion was finally released. 9 years later, Koratala Siva has recreated the concept of a daunting question around a movie’s ending. Who killed Devara and why?
Koratala Siva’s latest film Devara: Part 1 starring Jr NTR released to box office success, although the reviews were mixed. It has already grossed Rs 446 crore at the box office. Jr NTR played a double role in the film, enacting the roles of the titular Devara and his son Vara. If you have not watched the film yet, reading beyond this point may result in spoilers. The climax of the film results in an unexpected twist.
When Vara and Bhaira’s men head into the sea, they’re unexpectedly attacked by a mysterious force they believe to be Devara. It’s soon revealed that the attacker is Vara himself. Devara had died the night he was attacked, and for years, Vara had been protecting the sea from smugglers.
Though he was seen as a coward by others, this was simply a cover for his true identity as a guardian, much like his father. Vara not only took over his father’s role but proved to be even more cunning. Upon returning to shore, he meets Singappa and asks him to carve a cross into his back, signifying his desire to remain an unseen protector, akin to the superhero Phantom.
As for Devara’s death, it’s revealed in the final scene that Vara tearfully killed his father. But the lingering question is whether Devara asked for this or if there was ill intent. Some fans think that Devara’s death was orchestrated by Rayappa. We will have to wait for the sequel to find out for sure.
