Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of BJP will launch an agitation after Independence Day, to demand the release of "innocent" persons detained in connection with Kishtwar violence and compensation to traders, who have suffered losses and damages.
It will also seek the strengthening of Village Defence Committees (VDCs) which have played a vital role in controlling militancy.
“After the Independence Day, our party will launch a sustained agitation in support of the demands conceded by the government in the wake of Kishtwar incidents,” state party president Jugal Kishore Sharma said.
“These demands include immediate release of innocent persons under detention, paying compensation to the minority traders who has suffered during the Kishtwar riots and further strengthening of the VDCs,” he added.
The BJP, for the time being, has suspended its agitationprogramme, including a shutdown called for Saturday keeping in view the Independence Day celebrations tomorrow.
The party, along with other organisations, had called for a shutdown last Saturday in protest against the communal violence in Kishtwar. It had later extended the shutdown to Sunday and Monday, demanding resignation of MoS Home Sajjad Kitchloo.
Meanwhile, VHP said that it will launch an agitation from August 16 in support of its demand for full compensation for losses incurred by minority community traders in Kishtwar in the communal clashes which rocked the town on Eid.
"We have suspended the bandh for time being -- we will resume agitation from August 16 and continue it till our demands are met,” VHP state chief Rama Kant Dubey said.
