BANGALORE: Outgoing Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa is to be squarely blamed for the course of his political journey - from the head of a government in May 2008 to his ignominious exit in July 2011. The fall is indeed ironical for the man who built the party assiduously. But a cursory glance into his style and conduct during the last three years brings out the stark fact that it was all of his own making.Autocratic behaviour, impulsive style of functioning, refusal to accommodate the interests of his party colleagues and his opponents within the party, are some of the important factors that built the atmosphere inimical to his survival. But what eventually proved to be his nemesis is the involvement of his friends and relatives in corrupt deals as exposed by the Opposition parties, especially former CM H D Kumaraswamy. It was at this point that the BJP felt uneasy to defend the CM on the issue of corruption, thus making his position vulnerable. He also failed to remove the impression that his children gave directions to the officers which made the already indifferent bureaucracy more hostile.Having had to keep a watch on the machinations of JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda, who was determined to overthrow the government, Yeddyurappa found little time for day-to-day governance and attending to the needs of party workers. In his effort to consolidate his position, within the party and in the government, he packed the government bodies with his own men and women much to the discontent of the general party cadre. He also failed to pacify the disgruntled MLAs who revolted more than thrice in these three years.Yeddyurappa’s yet another strategic mistake was his failure to break ice with his bete noire Ananth Kumar, whose capacity for machinations and clout in the central unit were too well known.Yeddyurappa failed to keep this Advani acolyte in good books, who influenced the course of events. He also totally relied on party president Nitin Gadkari and did not keep others in good humour.
