Businessman robbed off valuables worth Rs 52 lakh

Around 150 sovereigns of gold and Rs 16.5 lakh in cash were reportedly burgled from a businessman’s house in Kodungaiyur on Wednesday.

Anthony, a resident of Radhakrishnan Salai in Vivekanandan Nagar, who ran a camera shop on Kasi Chetty Street in Parry’s Corner, was not at home when the burglars struck, police said.

His wife Maria, who was at a relative’s house, returned home in the evening to find a lock on the front door broken.

Inside, Maria found two steel shelves broken open and valuables worth Rs 36 lakh and Rs 16.5 lakh in cash missing. Police were subsequently alerted.

Pulianthope Inspector L Shankar rushed to the spot and conducted inquiries.

Deputy Commisssioner Karhikeyan and ACP Kovimanoharan, who reached the house later, also conducted investigations.

As the main door to the house was located inside the compound, this provided ample cover for the burglars to patiently cut the lock and gain entry, police said, while adding that a hacksaw was also recovered from the house. Police suspected the involvement of those known to the family in the burglary. A case has been registered.
