BANGALORE: Normalcy seems to have taken a wrong turn, when it comes to life on Miller’s Tank Bund Road. The once noisy stretch has almost gone mute, thanks to the disruption caused by BWSSB’s development work. The condition of the road is in an abominable state.Towards Thimmaiah Road, the stretch has been dug up by the BWSSB to lay a 700 mm diametre sewage submain pipes. High rising mounds of mud, uneven ground and battered pavements have been the order of the day here for over a month now. Thanks to Friday evening’s rain, half the road is now covered with slush.Stressed about the situation and the effect it has on his business. Gowda, a vegetable shopowner said, “Work here has been going on for over a month now. When we approached the authorities about the deadline, they said that they had struck a rock underground, because of which they cannot proceed. Due to all the mess and the slush that surrounds my shop, customers find it hard to access it.” Speaking about the work in progress, BWSSB executive engineer for waste water management, Abdul Nazir confirms Gowda’s claims. He said, “We have hit a rock because of which the work pace has slowed down. Depending upon the progress we make with the drilling, we should be done with the work hopefully within the next month.”The total cost for the project, Nazir explains, is Rs 55 crore. While most of the work is complete, there are a few spots that still need some work. The sewage submain will gather all the sewage from the surrounding houses and localities and lead it all the way to the Koramangala and Challaghatta valley at Belur Nagasandra village behind the Old Airport. This treatment plant is currently receiving an average of 160 ML of sewage per day.The ‘dig’ is not the only source of worry for the residents on Miller’s Tank Bund Road. While the residents have to patiently wait for the work here to commence, the lack of thought by the civic agencies is only creating more problems. It seems as if while doing one good thing, the authorities have forgotten about the trail of consequences they could be leaving behind.Due to the digging, the entire stretch has become muddy and uneven. While the locality is situated in one of the most affluent areas that the city can boast of, at the moment it bares a look of disdain and dismay. What makes matters worse is when one takes into account the safety hazards that the area can pose. It is hard to have a sense of security when one looks at the flimsy tape that have been tied around the excavated area. When questioned about the safety measures that the authorities have forgotten about, Nazir was quick to add that he will look into the matter.Speaking of the state of the pavements, Vishal, a resident said, “While in some areas the covering slabs are missing, in others the entire pavement seems to have vanished. Loose cables hang from trees. During the night, the area is not well lit hence, it is very easy for someone to trip over these cables.” To add to it all, construction debris left on the pavement by a private builder has consumed whatever little space was left to walk on.
