KOCHI: Exposing further the mafia behind the dumping of waste at open spaces in the city, one more lorry carrying waste which came to the Port Trust area has been taken into custody. The CISF took into custody a lorry, which was carrying waste from piling, in the wee hours of Thursday. The vehicle was later released after being collected fine. According to the officials, a patrolling team of the CISF came across the vehicle carrying waste, near the Konkan storage tank and Alexander Parambithara bridge, around 1.45 am. The vehicle was taken into custody. Later, the lorry workers agreed to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, following which the vehicle was released. ‘City Express’ had reported on Thursday about a mafia allegedly operating in connivance with certain police officials for dumping waste at open space, near the Alexander Parambithara bridge. The issue came to light after the CISF took into custody one lorry which was carrying septic tank waste. The lorry was taken into custody after a tussle between the CISF officials and the lorry workers. In a statement before the CISF, the lorry workers said they had paid some money to the police patrolling teams. The CISF has taken into custody as many as 48 lorries during 2010 and 2011 for the same offence and collected about Rs 6 lakh as fine from the lorry workers. City Police Deputy Commissioner Gopalakrishna Pillai told ‘City Express’ that they would look into the issue. “The issue has not come our attention. We will look into it and action will be taken,” he said. Meanwhile, the Harbour Police officials said they have begun investigating into the issue. The police have begun probe into the issue of dumping waste. The statements of lorry workers and others involved would be collected, based on which action will be taken, police said.
