Chennai: Thousands brave chill to attend R-Day parade
Governor K Rosaiah and CM J Jayalalithaa drove past the invitees enclosures and exchanged greetings with the public.

CHENNAI: Despite tight security and the chill weather, thousands of people gathered on the Marina in the early morning of Thursday to celebrate the 63rd Republic day. Most of them came in family groups, sporting the tricolour on their clothes. Governor K Rosaiah unfurled the tricolour at the saluting base while a low-flying Indian Air Force helicopter showered rose petals.

Earlier, Governor and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa drove past the invitees’ enclosures and exchanged Republic Day greetings with the public. The Governor took the salute of the 44 contingents of the Army, Navy and Air Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force,  Railway Protection Force, Chennai City Police, Mounted Police,  Tamil Nadu Commando Force, Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu Fire Service, Home Guard, NCC, Bharat Scouts and ex-servicemen during the ceremonial march past.

A rich tableaux of floats depicting the various welfare measures and populist schemes of the AIADMK government marked the Republic Day celebrations on Marina. The arts represented by Kummi, Oyilattam, Karagattam, folk dance, Bharathanatyam were presented.

South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur and State Information Department organised Songi Mukhawate dance (Maharashtra), Gangaur dance (Madhya Pradesh), Thappattam (Andhra) and Kai Silambattam.
