THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A chicken curry for Rs 15 and a vegetable curry for Rs 10. The Central Prison at Poojappura is taking a new step on Wednesday by selling these curries at prices much lower than those in private hotels and restaurants. The curries will be made available through the prison outlet in front of the main entrance of the prison opened for the sale of prison-made ‘chapatis.’ Curries will be available only with ‘chapati’ packets. A packet of one chicken curry with five ‘chapatis’ will be made available for Rs 25 and a packet with vegetable curry will be sold for Rs 20.“It has been decided to put maximum ten inmates in the curry-making unit in the first phase,” said B Pradeep, the Superintendent of the Central Prison. The making of chicken and vegetable curries, which had got sanction from the authorities along with that for the making of ‘chapatis’, was announced by the Prison authorities a month back. Chicken purchased from the Kerala State Poultry Development Corporation (KEPCO) and vegetables from Horticorp will be used for the making of curries. The decision to use chicken from the poultry farm of Nettukalatheri open prison to make curry had to be changed since the chicken from there was sufficient only for the use of the inmates.Vegetables cultivated on the prison premises which are in surplus after the use of inmates would be used for making curry, while the major portion of vegetables will be purchased from Horticorp. The prison is also planning to start a poultry farm soon. The inauguration of the sale will be done by Labour Minister Shibu Baby John at 12.30 pm on Wednesday.
