Bengaluru: Facing flak over severe water pollution, the Karnataka government has formed a panel to study the extent of encroachments by both the government and private companies.
A ground survey revealed that nearly 11,595 acres of lake bodies were encroached and almost 50 per cent of all sewage in Bengaluru flows into the Bellandur lake alone. It also revealed that only 2% of the city's lakes have been left unpolluted.
"One fifth of Bengaluru lakes encroached, which need to be clear," sources in the government said.
It was learnt that Karnataka Chief Minister orders immediate clearing of encroachments on storm water drains, calls for action against corrupt officials.
Meanwhile, encroachers have sought stay orders from various courts and asked for some time to resolve the issue.
An independent Indian Institute of Science (IISc) study says only two per cent of the city's lakes are left unpolluted and rest have sewage and industrial contamination.
IISc had studied 105 lakes in and around Bengaluru and found that 45% of all sewage in Bengaluru flows into the Bellandur lake alone.
