CHENNAI: A writ plea for a direction to the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in Bangalore and the State government to close down the Tamil pandit training certificate course offered by the Government College of Education in Orathanadu in Thanjavur district has been made in the Madras High Court. The first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam, before which the public interest writ petition from B Radhakrishnan of Edamalaipatti Pudur in Tiruchy came up for hearing on Monday, ordered notice returnable in four weeks. Petitioner’s counsel SP Sudalaiyandi submitted that the college had not obtained necessary approval from the NCTE, the statutory body governing teachers’ education, to run the six-month certificate course in Tamil pandit.  The college, run by the government, had also been claiming that the Tamil pandit training certificate course was equivalent to B Ed Tamil pandit course and admitting about 200 students every year. Petitioner had lodged a complaint with the NCTE on July 19 last. As there was no response, he filed the present petition.
