New Delhi: Students desirous of becoming doctors will take just one common entrance examination for MBBS and PG seats from next year. The common examination will be applicable to all private and government medical institutions and colleges.
The panel of doctors representing the Medical Council on Tuesday finalised the plan to hold a common entrance examination for MBBS and PG seats across the country. The idea of the common examination is to make a nationwide merit list of students.
The MCI Governing Council head Shiv Kumar Sarin said that Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had approved of a common entrance test and the tests should be a reality by next year.
"The Common Entrance test for undergrads and post graduate students will soon be a reality. The Health Minister has approved (it). We are awaiting the notification to be issued. Once the notification is issued it should be implemented for 2010-2011," said Sarin.
However, the common entrance examination will not affect the state quotas and colleges can continue to have reserved seats for students from their state.
The proposal will also not affect the management quotas of private colleges and deemed universities. The fee structure of colleges will also not change.
The idea behind a common entrance examination is that meritorious students will get to choose their college of preference anywhere in the country. The notification is likely to be issued by the Health Ministry within the next three days.
A single examination will also make the admission process more transparent as instances of private colleges selling their seats to the highest bidder have already been reported earlier.
