The RLD says Mayawati was left off by Congress in the Taj corridor scam to get votes in Presidential elections.

New Delhi: Did the UP Governor's refusal of permission to the CBI to prosecute Chief Minister Mayawati in the Taj Heritage corridor case have any links with the Presidential polls?

At least two major political parties of the state expressed this suspicion on Wednesday, with the BJP stating in no unclear terms that the action smacked of "horse trading".

"It (Governor's action) is possible to arouse suspicion about horse trading when the election to the post of the President is so close," senior BJP leader Sahib Singh Verma told journalists in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

"The BJP will study the case (action of the Governor)... permission of the Governor is not required to prosecute the Chief Minister," he said. Verma, however, said: "Mayawati does other than what she speaks. We hope Mayawati will vote for us (BJP)."

The Rashtriya Lok Dal, headed by Ajit Singh, also alleged that Mayawati was let off in the case by the Congress to secure votes in the Presidential polls.

"To secure the votes for the coming Presidential elections, the Congress leadership tactfully purchased Mayawati by freeing her from the Taj heritage corridor case," party general secretary Mankunnh Suresh alleged in a statement.

He described the decision of UP Governor TV Rajeshwar as "undemocratic and unfair" and said the refusal of sanction was "as per the guideline of Congress leadership."

"Through his decision, the Governor has gifted political future to Mayawati, as she was afraid about the verdict of the Taj Corridor case," Suresh said.
