New Delhi: The Gujarat government on Friday dedicated the Sardar Sarovar project to the nation.
However, even as the state government did this, a contempt petition was filed in the Supreme Court.
The petition says the dam height has been raised to over 121 metres instead of 119 metres, but rehabilitation of oustees - which was to happen before this - is yet to be completed.
The dam is set to generate 1450 megawatts of hydropower and the multi-purpose project aims to provide irrigation facility to more than 18,000 square kilometers of area- most of it in drought prone areas like Kutch and Saurashtra.
It will also connect main canal of 458 kilometres, branch canal of 2400 kilometres and distributory of 1500 kilometres. It also includes 28,000 kilometres minor and 30,000 kilometres sub-minor canals.
The project will also provide drinking water to about two crores population of Gujarat and about 15 lakh people in Rajasthan.
The Sardar Sarovar is the centre-piece of the multi-billion dollar Narmada Valley development project that taps the Narmada, the country's fifth-largest river, through a series of dams, reservoirs and canals.
