KOCHI: In an initiative to reduce the increasing number of accidents in Kochi, the City Traffic Police have once again tightened the grasp over those who violate traffic norms. As part of the initiative, the traffic police have increased the use of radar speed guns which can spot over-speeding vehicles from a distance of nearly one kilometre. “The permissible speed limit within the city is 50 kmph. The radar will capture the image and register the speed at which each vehicle is travelling. So the entire procedure is transparent. The violators cannot escape since all the details of the vehicle, including the image of the number plate, will be automatically registered by the device,” said traffic SI P K Sabu. “While checking for over-speeding vehicles on the Kaloor-Kathrikkadavu road, we caught over 35 defaulters in less than five days. We even nabbed people who were driving at more than 85 kmph speed. If this is the case with just one stretch of road in Kochi, one can guess the level of over-speeding that happens in the entire city,” Sabu added. Defaulters are charged `300 as fine for over-speeding, whereas the police have the authority to even cancel the driver’s licence of repeat offenders.Police officials also said that the checking will be stringent to spot defaulters of other traffic norms like buckling the chin strap of helmets, having proper side and rear-view mirrors, left side overtaking, and the like.
