Kaivalam will take place between October 7 and 10 at ITC Grand Chola and across several galleries across Chennai, along with Indian Craft Bazaar hosted by Crafts Council of India.
Founded in New York in 1964 by Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, India, Aileen Webb and Margaret Patch, USA, WCC is engaged in craft documentation, design development, training of crafts persons, upgrade of tools and technology and providing a forum for interaction and exchange of ideas.
The five regions of WCC are Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and Latin America.
That event that coincides with the 17th General Assembly of WCC was lunched by Usha Krishna, president, WCC, at Amethyst Royapettah.
Providing an insight into the line-up of events, Usha Krishna said, “It is going to be a plethora of crafts and related arts during Kaivalam. A first of its kind initiative, the first event of the summit will begin with a seminar on the topic ‘the future is handmade’”.
Another highlight of ‘Kaivalam’will be an interactive session called Living Legends with craft legends from Rwanda, Niger and Uzbekistan. Aiming to expose the domestic craftsmen to the works of other craftspeople from across the globe, the event also showcases the works and efforts of the indigineous artists.
Usha Krishna also adds that the concept of crafts changes with every country and region. “The event will therefore present the understanding of the concept and offer a bird’s eye view of the different interpretations of crafts,” she says.
Other events at the summit are Crafts Expo, WCC international crafts film contest, cultural extravaganza, interdisciplinary exhibitions of craft and art in galleries, exhibtition and sale of exquisite Indian jewellery, expo of textiles and textile creations, Sewa workshop and a curtain raiser for the Golden Jubilee of WCC in 2014.
The event is being presented by WCC in association with the Office of Development Commissioner Handicrafts (DCH)- Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of Culture (Government of India), Ganjam, Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council ( GJEPC), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Self Employed Women’s Association(Sewa) and Poompuhar — The Tamil Nadu Handicraft Development Corporation, in their capacities as partners.
