The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) celebrated their 70th Founders Day here on Tuesday. Several staff members were honoured during the function for their service.
Founded in September 26, 1942 as an apex body under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, with the prime objective to catering to the needs of the industrial development of the country, CLRI is one of the National Laboratories under the umbrella of CSIR, devoted to research and development activities in leather and allied industries.
Members from both the industry and academia took part in the celebrations held at the Triple Helix Auditorium. Prof Dr AB Mandal, director, CSIR-CLRI, highlighted the significant contributions of the institute in science and technology towards the development of society.
Former director Dr G Thyagarajan recollected the contributions of Dr A L Ramaswamy Mudaliar and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as well as Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar in conceptualising the foundation of CSIR. “I appreciate the capabilities of CSIR in taking confident decisions in different spheres of science and technology,” he added.
Delivering the Founders Day lecture, Dr Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, focussed on the importance of alternate sources of energy to end the power shortage currently faced by the country. In this connection, he spoke in detail on tapping of the solar energy and possible measures for its storage, stressing on the importance of taking pro-active measures in this direction.
The institute honoured more than 40 staff members for their service of 25 years and the retiring members. Eight meritorious children of the CSIR-CLRI staff received cash awards for excelling in the higher secondary board exams. The prizes for drawing, essay and quiz competitions and a cricket match for the staff, were also distributed.
The day was also observed as an Open day and many students from different city schools visited the campus to study the various ongoing R and D activities and technical capabilities of the institute.
