Jhabua: At least 80 people are feared dead in a big explosion at Petlawad in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh.
The accident took place on Saturday morning. While Police have begun a probe into the case, reports say it could be an LPG cylinder explosion. Police have found gelatin rods and detonators used in mining at a place near restaurant which exploded along with the cylinder at restaurant.
The Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh has been asked by the government to probe into the explosion.
The blast took place around 8.30 AM in a building housing the restaurant situated in Petlawad town. Police are yet not clear on what triggered the blast but the presence of rods and gelatin is being termed as illegal.
Many others are suspected to be trapped in the debris, said an official, adding that the exact number of casualties will be known once the debris is cleared. Also, the gas cylinder explosion has caused damages to a number of adjacent buildings, he said.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed sadness over the accident and assured that the cause of accident will be investigated. He also announced compensation worth two lakh rupees to the relatives of dead and fifty thousand for those who are injured.
Senior officials from Jhabua have rushed to the spot to launch rescue operations while Madhya Pradesh Tribal Welfare Minister Antar Singh Arya is expected to reach the site soon.
