While narrating the incident, an eyewitness said, "Manoj reached at 8:15 PM, he met us. We had a discussion of a minute and a half when five men walked in and started surrounding him. People started screaming, even i started running, I heard the sound of gunshots. The police asked us not to worry, but when I turned to see, Manoj was already dead."

According to police officials, when they went to arrest the suspect at the restaurant he opened fire following which the police retaliated, leading to the suspect's death. Police sources claimed that there are over a 100 cases of cheating against Manoj. He and his family members were also arrested in a cheating case in 2002, the sources said.

Both Manoj and his wife Priyanka have political background. While Priyanka is an elected member of municipal body in Bagpat, Manoj was a member of Samajwadi Party and had even uploaded pictures with senior laders of the party on social media.
