Details of rowdies in TN sought

Justice N Kirubakaran at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, taking into account the safety and security of people has instructed the Home Secretary of the State and the Director General of Police (DGP) to produce before him records on crime in Tamil Nadu in the recent years.

He also asked for details on how many contract killers or rowdy gangs are active in the State and if the organised crime groups have any political, religious, communal or extremists backing.

The home secretary and DGP are also directed to state before the judge the crime rate and conviction rate in respect of offences involving contract killers for the past ten years and actions taken to control them from committing crimes.

“Is there a separate wing in the police force to tackle these groups? If no wing is formed so far, when is the government going to form such a wing?” the judge asked. “Is the (Tamil Nadu) government contemplating on bringing a stringent legislation to tackle these groups.” he further asked.
