One of the world’s most celebrated orchestras, the Deutsche Philharmonie Merck, will perform in the city at Chowdiah Memorial Hall at 7 pm on October 3 to commemorate sixty years of Indo-German diplomatic relations.Bangloreans are in for a treat with this musical extravaganza.Founded in 1966, the orchestra which has so far performed in several cultural hubs such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Lisbon, Paris, Vienna, Lithuania, Brazil and Mexico.The ensemble consists of up to eighty professional musicians, brought together for various projects and covers all music styles from baroque to romantic to modern music and crossover projects.The Deutsche Philharmonie Merck is named after the Merck family of pharmacists, who in 1668 laid the foundations for the world’s oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company — today known as Merck in Darmstadt, Germany.The company is the orchestra’s main sponsor.The ensemble was founded in 1966, initially as an orchestra for Merck employees.Over the years, it has evolved into a professional orchestra.Nowadays it consists of up to eighty professional musicians, who are brought together for certain projects.Its repertoire covers all music styles from Baroque, romantic to modern music and crossover projects.
