To discuss and put forth the rights of domestic workers in the State, the Penn Thozhilalargal Sangam organised a meeting in the city on Wednesday.

Over 1,000 domestic workers participated in the meeting, attended by various associations and unions, including the CITU, AITUC, Tamil Nadu differently-abled welfare association and Tamil Nadu construction workers association.

The sangam, comprising around 18,000 members,  had been working towards getting recognition for domestic work as an employment and to fix minimum wages for the workers.

The sangam’s other demands include a pay of Rs 50 for an hour of work by a domestic help, a paid weekly off and a month salary as an annual bonus. “We also demand housing rights, change of out-patient timings in government hospitals and issue of bus passes at a concessional rate for the domestic workers,” said a member. “We have been staging protests since May across the state making these demands.  We had putforth our demands to government officials, including minister Gokula Indira, whom we have invited for the meeting,” she added.
