New Delhi: India will not accept anything in the Indo-US Nuclear Deal which is outside the July 18 agreement, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said on Friday.
Answering questions after her inaugural speech at the annual 'Hindustan Times Leadership Summit,' she said the position of the Congress and that of the UPA was that all those areas, which are not acceptable, should not be included.
She was asked to comment on the US Senate having passed the Bill. "We welcome it. I don't know... The government will study and
formulate a response," she added.
"We sincerely hope that both Houses (Senate and House of Representatives) will sit down and reconcile. All those areas that are not acceptable to us will be excluded and only then we will welcome the bill happily," she said.
"The Congress position and that of the UPA is that nothing will be acceptable which is outside the 18th July agreement... All those
areas which are not acceptable to us, they should not be included," she added.
Earlier in her address on "India: The Next Global Superpower", she advised against being 'obsessed' with 'super-power status', saying it evoked images of hegemony and aggression.
She said India's standing in the world would be determined by the extent to which the weaker sections lead a secure and dignified life
at home. India's position in the world would be greatly influenced by its ability to continue to give its people a secure future.
She said India's global pre-eminence would not come from faster GDP growth alone, but would depend on how fast employment opportunities, literacy and quality of health is improved.
"I am somewhat uneasy with the very word superpower. For too many of us, it evokes images of hegemony, of aggression, of power-politics, of military might, of division and conflict... Let's not be too obsessed with acquiring super-power status. More and more successes will come our way. They will surely give us the global role that we seek and that we are perfectly equipped to fulfil..." she said.
