CHENNAI: Drinking water schemes will be implemented in eight districts, including Cuddalore and Villupuram during 2012-13 and execution of similar projects in six other districts will be evaluated, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development KP Munusamy told the Assembly on Monday. Making new announcements after a debate on the demand for grants for his departments, he said drinking water schemes will be executed at an outlay of Rs 1,527.63 crore, benefiting 44.36 lakh people. The project will be implemented in five municipalities, 17 town panchayats and 63 panchayat unions in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Pudukottai, Theni, Sivaganga, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Tirunelveli districts.The Kollidam river will be utilised for the Combined Drinking Water Scheme (CDWS) in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts. In Pudukottai and Sivaganga, rivers Cauvery and Kollidam will be utilised. In Coimbatore’s Zamin Uthukuli Town Panchayat, Pollachi North and South Panchayat unions, water from River Aliyar will be used for the CDWS. Similarly, in Tirupur district, the Tirumurthi dam will be used, while in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, River Tamaraparani will be the resource for the water supply.
