BANGALORE: Sensing early elections to the Karnataka Assembly the Congress, in the state which is completing its 60-day event Congress Nadige Janara Balige-a mass contact programme to connect with its grassroots workers-was focusing on shortlisting of the probables of the party candidates, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dr G Parameshwar informed here on Friday.Describing the 60-day programme as very successful, the KPCC president said that it had also helped the party analyse the strength of the party’s probables at the block and district levels who would seek ticket to contest the elections.Speaking to Express he said that, the 60-day programme of the party has helped to rejuvenate the party organisation at the base level and worked as a booster to brace up to face the next Assembly elections which may take place anytime soon, he said.Opining that in May 2008 Assembly elections, the party was stumbled at the door of power despite garnering the highest percentage of votes than any political partie and the KPCC chief said that this time we are treading with utmost caution not to falter again. Stating that continued infighting and groupism was added to misgovernance and corruption of colossal nature in the ruling BJP, the people are once again looking at the Congress and KPCC president said that our party has a bright chance to turn the table on our opponents.Stating that the Congress Nadige programme has helped to understand the problems being faced by the organisation at the grassroot level, he said that in its extended version a training programme for the elected leaders of the booth and Panchayath committee will be conducted from next month.During the three-month training programme he said that experts from various fields would be roped-in to impart training to the ranks.Congress party’s pro-people and pro-poor programmes and policies, sacrifices made by the party’s top leaders fore the country and its contribution to the development of the nation and the states would be taught to budding leaders in the training.Referring to the reported dwindling of support base to the party from the dominant communities including Vokkaliga and Lingayats, the KPCC chief however said that, people of the state have seen top leaders from both the communities and have given leadership in the past to the Congress. “The party is witnessing a transition phase, as for winning the support from both dominant communities and to make it happen, the party is grooming several promising leaders at the block and district level,” he said.Claiming that the BJP and JD(S) which have tasted power in the state not because that they have distinct programmes for poor and but because of the Congress losing several of its prominent leaders to the other side, he said that Congress is the only party which can accommodate all sections of the society and assure an inclusive growth.
