CHENNAI: The residents of various parts of Kodambakkam are in a state of anguish over the frequent unscheduled power failures in the area. What is worse is that they could not address their grievances to the TNEB under Kodambakkam, since most of their calls are not attended or the line is always engaged.“Doing something to solve our problems is something different but the issue is no one attend the calls,” said S Kasthuri Rangan, secretary of Choolaimedu Exnora innovators club. “We have no problems about the scheduled power cuts and we perfectly understand power generation issues. At the same time we cannot accept the unorganised power cuts at nights are frequent and the indifference shown towards our grievances”, he told City Express. He further added that the Choolaimedu Exnora club has made representations regarding several issues in the area to Valarmathi, MLA of Thousand Lights, among which the power failure is one of the issues mentioned.Meanwhile, Ratan Roy, a web designer of Trustpuram said, “We are caught unawares by the unexpected power failures most of the time. When we try to contact the officials in the emergency call number it is engaged most of the times and at times not attended, to our dismay. Now that the government has changed, we expect that the officials pay heed to our grievances at least now.”T Vimala, a resident of Choolaimedu also said that she expected to see a change in the approach of the officials at least now as the government has changed. “We welcome Amma’s actions on bringing back law and order and implementing compulsory helmet rule. Similarly we expect that Amma asks the electricity officials to listen to our grievances and take necessary actions in this regard.”However, senior electricity board officials claim that despite posting two staff members at the sub station to address the grievances of the public, they are unable to manage the calls since they are pouring in. “We are trying to manage but since calls are pouring in, we could not attend all the calls”, said an assistant engineer (AE) from the sub station. But ask him why there are so many calls and he cites service cable faults as the reason. “The fifteen year old service cable is at fault most of the times and we take frequent measures to maintain it. One of the major reason for the power failures is that the service cables get over heated”, he told City Express. He also stated that the sub station also has a new mobile number apart from the two existing landline numbers for the public to address their grievances. According to the AE, the newly introduced mobile number is 944585435 and public can contact this number in case the other lines are engaged or unavailable.
