CHENNAI: As a part of Exnora International’s “Fight global warming in your home” campaign, an ‘ecofriendly’ model flat was inaugurated by actor Vivek on Saturday evening at the Arihant Majestic Towers, Koyembedu. The four-bedroom flat houses 400 plants, including vegetable plants, which are watered with waste water purified in a table-top sullage treatment plant located in the bathrooms. The house features a sky farming horticulture balcony that embodies the concept of vertical gardening. Thermocol containers and plastic pipes, which are non-biodegradable, have been used to grow plants instead of adding to garbage.Further colour-coded dustbins have been placed in the house to help in waste segregation. Speaking on the occasion, Exnora International founder MB Nirmal, who conceptualised the model, said that global warming would lead to food shortage in the future, hence indoor vegetable gardening would become increasingly relevant. Abdul Ghani, Youth Exnora president, said the ecoflat embodied the principles of recycling, reusing and reducing waste. He said the NGO was aiming to create public awareness and promote the concept in the city.Actor Vivek lauded Nirmal’s consistent efforts to combat global warming. Hesaid that Nirmal had succeeded in empowering youth to create a social changethrough his conservation initiatives. He also promised to create more awareness on environmental issues in his forthcoming films.
