Minister for Local Administration and Rural Development K P Munusamy on Friday directed officials of Vellore Corporation to speed up the 40 crore Underground Drainage Scheme (UGD), that has fallen behind schedule by six months.
The minister, who was here to conduct a spot inspection of the development schemes of local body administrations in the district, directed Commissioner of Vellore Corporation Seeni Ajmal Khan and others to take appropriate action to ensure speedy completion of the UGD.
While the minister was inspecting the sewage treatment plant (STP), constructed under the UGD near Muthumandapam to treat the sewage collected from 24 of the 60 wards in the corporation, Ajmal Khan informed the minister that laying of the underground sewage pipeline has been completed for a stretch of 32 km of the proposed 60 km.
“The contractors have been given time to complete the work by December end this year,” said Ajmal Khan.
He also asked the officials to call the contractors for a review meeting to explain the reason for the delay.
The minister was accompanied by Health Minister Dr V S Vijay, Additional Chief Secretary Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department Sheela Balakrishnan, Collector Ajay Yadav, Vellore Corporation Mayor Karthiyayini and Deputy Mayor Dharmalingam. Munusamy also visited Thorapadi to inspect the construction of a two-lakh litre capacity sump constructed under the `1,295 crore combined water supply scheme.
He enquired with officials of the district administration and TWAD Board about the progress of the work.
He also visited the Otteri Park. Later in the day, the minister held a review meeting with officials of local body administrations.
