CHENNAI: A north Indian tenant has emerged as the main suspect following the murder of his prosperous house owner in Tiruporur on Wednesday. The victim, Sankarapandian Nadar (56), a resident of Bhajanai Koil Street in Navalur, ran ‘Valliammai Fancy Store’ in the same area, Inspector Balasubramani told Express. The shop owner had a large house and had rented out 10 portions to tenants, while occupying the first floor along with his wife Thangam (45). “It was the second marriage for both of them after their spouses passed away some years ago,” the inspector said.Sankarapandian had two daughters from his first wife Valli and both were married and settled. Thangam had two children from her earlier marriage and they stayed in Porur. The couple lived alone in the large house, the police officer said.On Wednesday, it was around 4 am when there was a knock on the front door. When Sankarapandian answered the door, three armed men attacked him with kni-ves. Thangam, who heard her husband’s cries, rushed out but the intruders pushed her inside the bedroom. In the scuffle, she sustained cut injuries on her right hand. The assailants then ransacked the steel almirah and escaped with about 25 sovereigns of ornaments. On emerging out of the bedroom, Thangam found her husband’s body near another bedroom with the throat slit and his gold chain and ring stolen. Senior police officials arrived at the scene of crime and sent the body to the government hospital in Chengalpattu for autopsy.Police got a lead when Thangam told them that she recognised one of the killers as tenant Samuel Biswas, who has been staying in their house for the last five years. Probe showed that Biswas, a native of West Bengal, ran a ‘Pani Puri’ stall and later worked in a cake shop. “At present, he runs a mobile tiffin shop in the locality, but since the incident he has been absconding,” the inspector said.It also came to light that Biswas had packed off his wife to their native State three months ago. This strengthened police suspicion that Biswas, who was aware that his house owner was rich, could have planned the murder in the hope of making a huge haul of gold and cash. While a special team left for Kolkata by train on Wednesday night to trace the absconding man, the police are probing whether relatives or business associates had a hand in the murder.
