Fearing the consequence of being absent from his duties without permission, a probationary constable committed suicide by consuming pesticide, Endosulphan, at his quarter adjacent to Zeddangi police station in the Agency area on Saturday night.
The deceased, Mattaparthi Srinivasa Rao (26), after completion of his training, was posted at Zeddangi police station six months ago. According to information, Rao was to relieve a sentry constable at around 8 pm on Saturday. With Rao not turning up at the police station, some of his colleagues went to his quarter. They found Rao vomiting before the latter told them that he had consumed endosulphan.
Rao was rushed to a government hospital nearby the police station where he was given first aid. Later, his colleagues shifted Rao to the government hospital at Eleswaram for better treatment. But, the doctors there declared him brought dead. When contacted, Zeddangi sub-inspector said Rao was absent from his duty for four days without informing the higher-ups. “ Rao was asked to report the same to the higher officials recently, which is a normal procedure followed in each police station. Fearing the consequence, he committed suicide,” said the sub-inspector.
Rao, a native of Tallarevu village in Kakinada Rural constituency, along with his nine colleagues joined his duty at Zeddangi police station on February 9. He belongs to a farming family. Rao discontinued his degree course before joining the police department.
Rao’s autopsy was done in Eleswaram government hospital on Sunday and his body was handed over to his family members.
