Peshawar: Authorities of this sleepy town have taken strict security measures including banning entry of Afghan refugess close to the Arbab Niaz Stadium, the venue for the first of the five One-Day cricket internationals between India and Pakistan to be held on Monday.
Visiting teams had often expressed their concern over security of their players in Peshawar and to ensure safety of the players a thick security cover has been thrown around.
"The authorities have banned entry of Afghan refugees close to the venue of the match and other urban parts of the city due to security reasons," The News reported on Saturday.
"Carrying cellular phones, water bottles and other things inside the ground that could result in any headache for the law enforcement agencies have also been barred," the report said.
"Strictest security measures would be taken in and around the stadium for maintaining law and order. Two thousands police officials with all the SPs of the district, 18 DSPs, 30 inspectors, 100 each sub-inspectors and ASIs and 200 head constables along with 1500 foot constables would guard the Arbab Niaz Stadium," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Peshawar, Mohammad Saeed Wazir, was quoted by the newspaper.
Quoting sources in the law enforcement agencies, the report said that all the routes leading to the ground would be given VIP security status while VVIP security cover will be awarded to players and officials of both the teams.
"We would be involved in many security duties, including Ashura Moharram, but the top priority would be cricket match as the whole world would be watching it," a senior city police officer remarked.
