A first year student attempted suicide after being ragged by five seniors.

New Delhi: Four students have been arrested in connection with a ragging case at Government Agriculture Engineering College at Baptla in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh where the humiliated victim attempted to commit a suicide.

Triveni, the 20-year-old first year agriculture engineering student of the engineering college was brutally ragged by five senior students who forced her to dance in the nude.

She then consumed a hair dye to end her life but was taken to a hospital where her condition continues to be critical.

She had been in coma for a fortnight but regained consciousness on Thursday and wrote the names of her seniors on a piece of paper after which her parents informed the police.

Triveni identified her tormentors as Shrevanti, Saujanya, Nazma, Vanitha and Sahithi.

Triveni's father Ramna said that she had been complaining of ragging since the day she joined the college.

"She had been complaining of ragging ever since she joined the college. When I asked to talk ot the warden, she said it would hurt her academics if I complained. She said all students depend on the seniors for study material. So I kept quiet. When she went back to college after this semester, on February 24, the ragging was even worse. They called her late at night and harassed her. This should not happen to any other child," said Ramna.

College Principal PV Satyanarayana said that all the girls accused of ragging have been suspended.
