Singur: Fresh clashes broke out in Singur between Bengal police and the Trinamul Congress supporters on Sunday leaving dozens of people injured, including 11 policemen.
Police resorted to lathicharge, used the water cannon and also fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
The clash took place when the police tried to stop the political rally from moving inside Singur, where section 144 has been imposed.
Later, Trinamul supporters blocked the adjacent National Highway 2 after calling for a statewide protest on Monday.
Clashes between Trinamool Congress activists and police broke out when party workers were marching towards Singur—the site where work over Tata’s car project is in progress.
"Eleven policemen were injured in the clashes and four of them had to be taken to the hospital for first aid", said IG Raj Konojia.
He said protestors armed with bamboo poles had gathered at four points in the district in the afternoon to kickstart the days' agitation against acquisition of fertile farmland for the Tata Motors' project.
Trinamool Congress said that over 17 supporters sustained injuries in ‘unprovoked’ police lathicharge.
West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee Working President, Pradip Bhattacharya blamed the state government for violence in different parts of Hooghly district saying, "the government had promised to talk with the opposition, but it has reneged."
"Instead of using force, government should have called the opposition parties for discussion to reach an amicable solution," Bhattacharya said.
He, however, condemned the violent incidents and attack on the Tata godown, saying, "we do not believe in the politics of violence. We must stay away from violence as that would lead to a loss of focus."
