PUDUCHERRY: Sporadic cases of gastroenteritis have been reported here from Friday, following which there was an outbreak in Boomianpet where around 17 people have been affected, with nine admitted in IGGGH.  Special camps have been opened in a primary school in the area and patients have been treated with ORS and antibiotics, said Dr V V Rao, Deputy Director (Public Health).  Subsequently, cases were reported from Mudaliarpet, Nellithope, Ouppalam and other places.Contamination of drinking water in some lanes has been due to the domestic line becoming submerged in the drainage leading to seepage of drainage water, according to Tahsildar Ramesh who inspected the sites.  In some areas, the damage caused to the underground lines during road laying work also led to seepage of contaminated water into  drinking water pipelines. As the drains were blocked with debris after cyclone Thane, there was an accumulation of water leading to seepage in adjoining water pipes. In several areas, parts of pipes have been replaced with new ones, said PWD chief engineer S Manohar.  In some streets, where there was breakage in the lines and water has been supplied bypassing the lines, he added.Narrow lanes with drinking water pipelines and drains close together were the worst hit.  The clearing of drains has been taken up and accumulated water drained out.
