Genes play key role in happiness: Study
Our level of happiness is strongly influenced by the genes with which we were born, says study.

London: A fascinating research in the UK has linked the level of happiness one experiences in life with the "genetic architecture" of our personality.

The study by the Edinburgh University in conjunction with researchers at the Institute for Medical Research in Queensland, Australia, suggested that our level of happiness is strongly influenced by the genes with which we were born.

"Although happiness is subject to a wide range of external influences we have found there is a heritable component of happiness which can be entirely explained by genetic architecture of personality," said Dr Alexander Weiss, from Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, who led the research published in journal Psychological Science.

Comparing the results in their study of identical and non-identical twins, researchers calculated how a particular trait is strongly influenced by genetic factors.

The differences between the results from the identical and fraternal twins suggested that genes might control half the personality traits that keep us happy.

The other half is linked to lifestyle, career and relationships, the BBC online reported.
