New Delhi: A teenage girl who went to celebrate the New Year with friends was murdered in south-west Delhi with on Sunday. Investigators are waiting for the post mortem report to ascertain whether she was raped before being killed.

Police have detained four people in connection with the murder. However, no arrests have been made as yet.

The 17-year-old girl had left her home on December 31 evening to celebrate the New Year with her friends but was found murdered in a vacant plot owned by Delhi Metro in Dwarka Sector 14 on Saturday at around 3:30 pm by a passerby.

"The girl was first strangled with her own denim trousers which was found wrapped around her neck. Then her face was smashed with stones to make the identification of the victim difficult," a senior police official said.

Broken stones with blood stains were recovered from the spot.

This is the first case of crime against women reported in the capital this year. The identity of the girl has been established.

The victim, whose parents have died, was residing with her brother in the servants quarters of Lady Hardinge Hospital.

Preliminary medical examination suggested there was "sexual activity" but it could not be confirmed whether it was "consensual or forceful".

"There are signs of sexual intercourse but there are no injury marks on her private parts. Only a post mortem will ascertain whether it was consensual or rape. We are probing the matter," Sharad Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West), said.

The official said the victim had left her house on December 31 evening and was missing since then. She had told her brother that she was going to R K Puram with friends to celebrate the New Year eve, the official said.

The official said they were awaiting the post mortem report for ascertaining the exact cause of death. "We are probing all angles," he said.

Investigators said they were "clueless" about the motive behind the murder.

"The chain of events are yet to be established. How the girl landed in Dwarka is yet to be known. We are trying to establish whether any mobile phone calls took place which could lead us to cracking the case," the official said.

The body was found in the vacant plot. A Delhi Metro line runs near the plot and the station is not too far from the spot.
