Corruption and the Canacona building collapse incident dominated Goa Governor B V Wanchoo's speech on the occasion of Republic Day in Panaji on Sunday. Addressing the parade, the Governor referred to the January 4 incident in which over 30 people died after a five-storey building caved in at Canacona town.

"Today is the day of joy. But on this joyous occasion, our heart goes to our fellow citizens who recently lost their dear ones in tragic circumstances at Canacona," the Governor said in his customary address after inspecting the parade.

"Our deepest sympathies are with the families who suffered loss of life or property. I want to assure people that the state stands with them in this moment of crisis," Wanchoo said.

The Governor said the government was aiming for "zero tolerance" towards corruption. "Existing schemes would be integrated with unique identification number to improve delivery of services. This will help in plugging leakages and eliminating corruption," he said.
