Google Earth no threat: IAF chief
IAF cheif says the satellite images of India's defence installation displayed on Google Earth do not pose a threat.

Shillong: The satellite images of the country's defence installation displayed on the Google Earth website do not pose a threat, Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi said on Friday.

"Google is not a threat to the IAF. Showing defence establishments is not a big deal. I can also see others' (security set-up using the same technology). We live in a transparent world," he said.

Google Earth had began displaying the images only recently "but I have been seeing them for the last 20 years", Tyagi said.

Replying to a question about intrusion into Indian airspace by aircraft from neighbouring countries, especially in the north east and Jammu and Kashmir, he said the Government and the IAF consistently monitored such activities and were aware of them.

He said high-level air intrusions were detected by radar, while low-level ones were not.

"No country in the world has radars covering every inch of the sky," Tyagi said.

It was a fact that some air intrusions had taken place in the past.

"It is not necessary that every time an intrusion takes place, the IAF has to shift a full squadron and declare a full-fledged war," he said.

Sometimes foreign aircraft entered by mistake as had happened in Jammu and Kashmir.
