The Congress has stepped up its campaign demanding Union Minister General (retired) VK Singh's ouster from the government over his controversial remark on Dalits. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi led party MPs in a protest at the Gandhi statue in Parliament complex.
Singh had allegedly equated dalits to dogs in the aftermath of the killing of Dalit children in Haryana in September.
Firm on its demand, Congress MP Digvijaya Singh said, "General VK Singh must resign. He had a chance to apologise but he did not. This is the mindset of the people for centuries."
Slamming the Congress over the protest, Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, "Rahul has his waking up moment when he realises he wants to make something a political issue. VK Singh has personally clarified that he did not make such a statement. It's unfortunate that he is being traumatised for something that he did not say."
The government has only two more weeks left in the Winter Session to ensure passage of the key bills. Keen to carry forward economic reforms, the government has a heavy legislative agenda for both Houses from Monday which includes four more bills in the Lok Sabha, in addition to the two already listed, and seven in the Rajya Sabha where three bills are listed.
According to Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, GST Bill and the Real Estate Bill are on the list of Government Business in the Rajya Sabha during the week commencing today.
The government and the opposition, particularly Congress, are engaged in a cat and mouse game over GST Bill for quite some time.
The Business Advisory Committee of Rajya Sabha has allotted four hours for the consideration and passage of the GST Bill.
