New Delhi: As social activist Anna Hazare's fast enters Day 5 on Saturday, pressure is mounting on the UPA government to find a way out of the deadlock. The Parliament's Standing Committee has placed an advertisement in Saturday's newspapers calling for views from the public on the Lokpal Bill.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice, which is to suggest amendments to the Lokpal Bill, on Saturday published advertisements in leading newspapers, demanding suggestions on the Bill.
Though the timing of the advertisement gives an impression that it is in response to Anna Hazare's movement, this is a routine procedure.
"All the interested stakeholders should put their opinion in front of us, they will be considered carefully clause by clause, this process will be done," said Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.
The people who wish to express their views on the Lokpal draft are required to send their response within the next fifteen days starting Saturday.
The response can be either in English or Hindi and has to be addressed to Shri KP Singh, Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, 201, Second Floor, Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi-110001.
The advertisement says that those willing to appear before the standing Committee should mention that in their response.
"Those desirous of submitting memoranda to the Committee may send two copies thereof, neatly typed in double space (either in English or Hindi) to Shri KP Singh, Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, 201,Second Floor, Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi-110001 (Tel: 23034201, Fax: 23016784, E-mail:[email protected] and [email protected]) within fifteen days of publication of this advertisement. Those who are willing to appear before the Committee for oral evidence besides submitting the memorandum may so indicate. However, the Committee’s decision in this regard shall be final," the advertisement says.
Reacting to the newspaper advertisements seeking suggestions from public on Lokpal Bill, Kejriwal said it appeared to be an exercise which will waste the time of people and Parliamentarians.
"We appeared before the Standing Committee earlier and told them that the present bill is actually for promotion of corruption and save the corrupt people. It ends up in targeting those who complain against corruption," he said.
Kejriwal said they had urged the Standing Committee to reject the bill and send it back to Parliament. "It is wasting precious time on a wrong and faulty bill," he said.
"This seeking of feedback is basically to divert attention," he said.
