Granite case: Probe into officials role

Following the suspension of nine government officials for their alleged nexus with granite firm owners, the district administration has provided vital information to the rural police about the role of 15 government officials in the illegal granite quarrying scam.

These government officials include those who had worked previously in the districts and officials retired from various departments including Mines, Public Works, Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TNML), Factories (Labour & Employment) Inspectorate and the local administration.

These officials are said to have acted hand-in-glove with granite firm owners, including PRP shareholder Palanichamy, said a senior police official.

“We have formed 13 special teams to investigate how these officials helped the granite firm owners in bypassing the rules, thereby causing loss to the exchequer,” V Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police, Madurai Rural, told Express.

These teams would also investigate 25 other petitions against Palanichamy and other quarry owners alleging land grab, intimidation and cheating.
