New Delhi: Days after a Gurgaon mall employee was abducted and raped by 7 men, the Gurgaon police have now come up with their own method to ensure women's safety in the Capital. PC Meena, Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon, said, "Women can work post 8 pm, but there are some provisions, that if they do work after 8 pm, the employer will have to take permission from the Labour department. They'll have to present several details."
That's Gurgaon police's solution to rising number of rape cases. Make women stay home after dark. The police even blame the suburb's pub culture for the crimes. The latest being the abduction and gangrape of a 23-year-old woman outside the Sahara Mall.
Maheshwar Dayal, DCP, Gurgaon, said "Mall authorities can not be blamed for this. We are trying to address the government, that the place should be decongested of pubs."
It was planned to be a marque satellite township close to the national capital but the infrastructure is crumbling and law and order is a constant problem.
Residents blame the ineffective police. "We have to arrange for security ourselves. We are at the mercy of these security guards. We are scared when we go back home. There is no emergency number even where we can call," a Gurgaon resident says.
Pub owners have now been asked to install CCTVs and ensure safe transport facilities for women employees. But its doubtful if cracking down on pubs and women's freedom can replace some good old fashioned policing to dissuade miscreants.
