THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “Gyan Vani 105.6 FM, under the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is a tool for removing ignorance,” said poet O N V Kurup inaugurating Gyan Vani’s annual day celebrations at the VJT Hall here on Saturaday. People must open their heart to knowledge and should be ready to protest against the superstitions prevailing in the society. Love and co-operation will evolve only through expanding our knowledge. Radio is the strongest medium to percolate knowledge indiscriminately among all the age groups. Villages in India depend on radio for the purpose of education and entertainment. Gyan Vani tries to inculcate information with its various programmes through 37 stations across the country and has a major role in educating people, he said.K Kunjikrishnan, former Deputy Director General of Doordarshan, while presiding over the function, said that radio still had a reach in every nook and corner of our country. Earlier, the media was meant to provide information to the public. With the growth of television, radio had been ousted from the society. Now radio has been elevated into a mainstream medium with the growth of FM radio stations. There are more than 18 government and private-controlled FM radio stations in the cities of Bangkok and Sri Lanka. Our country has the potential to match this in terms of population and area, he said.Former Controller of Examinations, University of Kerala, M T Sulekha, IGNOU Regional Director B Sukumar, Vailopilli Samskriti Bhavan secretary Vilakkudy Rajendran, Gyan Vani Assistant Director Rajkeerti S Nair were also present at the function.
