KOCHI: The City Shadow Police along with the Ernakulam Central Police have busted a gang involved in illegal money transactions and hawala dealings focusing on the industrial belt of the city. The police on Friday arrested Roy, 40, of Kuzhiveli House, Market Road and seized an amount of Rs 6 lakh from him.According to the police, Roy who was working as a hawala transaction agent of the gang was involved in financing merchants when they go to other towns for trade purposes. The police had received a tip off about the operations of the network in the city, based on which a detailed raid was conducted on the Market Road. “The preliminary investigation has revealed that the hawala network was operating in such a way that once a trader gives a certain amount of money to the hawala agent in Kochi, the same will be available to his counterpart in Mumbai. The money which is being illegally transferred like this could be used for anti-national purposes and help extremist elements. Hence a probe will be launched,” police said. Action was taken based on the directive of City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar. The raids were conducted by a team led by Deputy Commissioner Gopalakrishna Pillai and Special Branch Assistant Commissioner Shamsu Illickal. Others in the team, included Shadow SI Mohammed Nisar, Central SI Shiji along with policemen Varghese and Renjith. The Ernakulam Central Police will take follow-up action on the issue.
