HC takes action against kangaroo court
The Madras High Court will take action against a kangaroo court making an accused couple kneel down.

New Delhi: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the police take action against a kangaroo court of Vadukapatti in Tiruchirappalli district for allegedly making a couple kneel down for several hours and taking away a gold chain for not paying fine amount.

Justice Dharma Rao Elipe and Justice P P S Janarthanaraja directed Tiruchirappalli Superintendent of Police to recover the gold chain and return it to the petitioner K Thiagarajan within one week.

The petitioner K Thiagarajan, a helper of AIR Tiruchirappalli, submitted that his neighbour Muthunaickam had allegedly tried to encroach his eight-cent land in Vadukaptti village.

When Muthunaickam failed to grab his land, he organised a kattapanchayat(kangaroo court) of 14 members.

During the trial, Thiagarajan was falsely charged of abusing the villagers and was asked to pay Rs 30,000 as fine.

The kattapanchayat members asked Thiagarajan and wife to kneel down for several hours before announcing that his fine amount was reduced Rs 3,100.

As he did not have the amount with him, they snatched his wife's five sovereigns weighing chain and asked him to take it back after paying the fine.
