PUDUCHERRY / CUDDALORE: Four thatched huts collapsed at Velrampet and portions of another two huts collapsed at Vaithikuppam under the impact of incessent heavy rains that lashed Puducherry and its suburbs for the last two days. No one was injured in the mishaps, as the inmates ran to safety.Raj Bhavan MLA K Lakshminarayanan who visited the huts at Vaithikuppam, on Saturday, said old houses continued to be under danger due to the  continuous rains. Moreover, boats and cattamarans of fishermen docked on the coast were also under threat of the rough sea and strong winds.Mudaliarpet MLA A Baskaran also visited Velrampet area where the huts collapsed and provided immediate relief to the affected.Puducherry received about 15.46 cm of rainfall  in the last two days, the met office said on Saturday.The rains also ensured that many trees   collapsed and blocked roads, which included a huge roadside tree near Thirukkanur which ended up blocking the Puducherry-Villupuram highway for nearly three hours.All the tanks were also full. The surplus water from Ousteri, the largest water body in Puduchery, was released  so that it did not pose a danger to the surrounding areas. Around 120 cubic feet of water from the tank was released  through the eight vents, said V Sathiyamurthy, executive engineer (irrigation division), PWD. All the 25 bed dams constructed across rivers were currently overflowing with more than 30 cm of water overflowing  crust level of the bed dams, he added.Some of the roads, which had been dug up for laying cables and pipes but had not been relaid, suffered massive damage.Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in the next 48 hours in some areas of Puducehrry along with Tamil Nadu as the depression continues to lie south west of Thiruvananthapuram.Flood Warning to Vellaru Villages Due to continuous rains battering the district for the last two days, the water level in the Veeranam Lake touched 45 ft on Saturday. A total of 3500 cusecs of water was released through the Velliyankal Canal and VNS dam. Flood water entered 25 villages in Chidambaram, Kattumannarkudi areas and crops on 30,000 acres got submerged. Since inflow to Veeranam has not stopped, many farmers in the region are worried that it will take more days for the water to drain.In Vriddhachalam, traffic to 20 villages including M Patti, Erumanur and Thottikuppam was halted on Saturday as water overflowed from Mari Canal and flooded the roads.
