For the first time in the state, the Irrigation Department will soon fix four hidden video cameras along the Ernakulam Market Canal to catch those who dump waste. So far, the Irrigation Department has installed hidden cameras only in dams. Pictures of 20 days will be auto-saved in cameras. A fine will be levied on the culprits. Hibi Eden MLA made the announcement on Wednesday after a visit to the canal area, along with the Irrigation Department officials, as part of the cleaning and renovation project of the canal.
The responsibility of maintaining the cameras will be vested with the city corporation. The cleaning and renovation work of the Market Canal will start in November and would be completed by March. `1.50 crore has been sanctioned for the project.
After cleaning, wire fences would be installed along the 600-metre stretch of the canal. The cameras will be fixed on the fencing. High-power pump will be used to remove waste from the canal.
In the first phase of the project, cleaning and strengthening of stone walls will be carried out. Apart from this, walkways with a width of one metre will be built starting from the Banerjee Road end of the canal. A meeting of the traders and union leaders will be convened to discuss the project, Hibi Eden said. He added that a final decision about the fixing of pumps will be taken only after consulting the corporation authorities. “The renovation work will be carried out with minimum disturbance to the traders,” MLA ensured.
