NEDUMBASSERY: Stressing the need to take care of elderly people in the society, Excise Minister K Babu said here the government was planning to formulate an Elders Policy soon. “The nuclear family system has made a thorough change in the attitude towards elderly people in our families. The society should pay more care and attention towards the elders,” he said.The minister said this while inaugurating Asraya Bhavan, a shelter for the poor elderly people residing in Nedumbassery. Anwar Sadath MLA presided over the meeting.Asraya Bhavan is an initiative of the Nedumbassery Grama Panchayat to provide accommodation, food, entertainment and medical aid to destitute elderly people. The CIAL had allotted one acre land and the Late K P Hormis Charity fund donated Rs 15 lakhs for the project.A delegation, including members of the panchayat committee, had gone abroad to collect fund for the construction of Asraya Bhavan, which will accommodate 25 people.The furniture items were supplied by the Parakkadavu Block Panchayat. The Social Welfare Department has agreed to provide `4.12 lakhs yearly for running the Bhavan.
