The seizure of heroin in a large quantity in the pilgrim town created a flutter among both devotees and residents.
Recently officials of the Bangalore-based Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) received credible information that some drug peddlers from Rajasthan are going to Tirupati to hand over the drug to other peddlers from Uttar Pradesh at Tirupati railway station.
The NCB officials laid a trap and caught red-handed four youth--Sohail and Shadab from UP), and Gopal Singh and Syam Singh from Rajasthan--at the reservation counter late on Wednesday night. Heroin worth Rs 5 crore was seized from them.
After interrogation at a secret location, they were produced before the Tirupati second additional court junior judge Kamalakar, along with the seized narcotic. The accused were remanded in custody till October 17. Further trail of the case will be held at the first additional district judge court in Chittoor.
The incident came to light only on Thursday night, with the NCB officials maintaining secrecy till producing the accused before the court. The incident shocked the citizens, who are worried that drug mafia has entered the pilgrim town.
Leaders of BJP and representatives of people associations began expressing concern over the drug mafia entering Tirupati.
Speaking to Express, Samanchi Srinivas, BJP leader and advocate, underlined the need for keeping special vigil to tackle such illegal activities to protect the sanctity of the temple town. He wanted police to take all the necessary steps to curb the menace
