BHUBANESWAR: Parking problem is narrowing the road outside the Exhibition Ground and driving along that stretch has become a tough job. The Exhibition Ground, in fact, has no parking facilities. One ‘Amar Motor Cycle Stand’, offering its parking services, is charging Rs 5 per two-wheeler for parking outside the both the grounds. According to senior officials of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), they have not authorised any parking outside the Exhibition Grounds. The vehicle owners who are paying for the parking fees to the Amar Motor Cycle Stand, are actually being robbed of their money. The authorities have written a letter to the deputy commissioner of police asking them to take action against the lawbreakers. The illegal parking has been flourishing for a long time, but any visible action is yet to be taken by the authorities. As it happens to be an important road connecting Janpath and Sachivalaya Marg, the congestion is a major problem to the schoolkids. On the other hand, the repair work of the road which was started last year by the Public Works Department in January is yet to be complete. The contractor had a deadline of 11 months. He left the construction work mid-way, without any notice. A showcause notice was issued to the contractor by the PWD around 15 days back, giving seven days to respond. Since he failed to do so, the superintendent engineer of PWD is looking after the matter. “The repair work of the road cannot resume unless the matter is resolved,” said a PWD official. On being asked if the contractor will be taken to task, chief engineer Bijan Behera said 20 per cent of the project cost would be recovered from the contractor as penalty. The total cost of the project is Rs 1.75 crore. If the contractor fails to complete the project, he will be slapped with a penalty amounting to Rs 34 lakh.
